Rockets into Space (Frontiers of Space)
Summary: Author - Frank H. Winter;
In this slim volume, Winter succinctly discusses the development of space launch vehicles--from the founders of modern space flight theory, to the early rocket experimenters, through current expendable launchers and space shuttles, to future space propulsion systems. Winter does a credible job of tracing the lineage of present-day launch vehicles from their Cold War origins as weapons systems to current satellite launchers. Although the galley of this book was marred by some irritating errors (e.g., the oft-made mistake of listing Apollo 11's launch date as July 18, 1969, when it was July 16), the book does fill a gap for general collections between David Baker's encyclopedic The Rocket and more generalized space flight histories. Hardcover.

Race to the Moon: America's Duel With the Soviets
Summary: Author - William B. Breuer;
Breuer, a writer of military books, here tells the story of Werner von Braun and his team of German rocket scientists who developed the infamous V-2 rocket that bombarded London and Antwerp during World War II. His military perspective serves him well in the chapters tracing the V-2's development history, the Allies' undercover espionage and overt military efforts to neutralize the weapon, and the fateful decision by von Braun's team to seek out and surrender to the Allies to avoid capture by the Soviets in the waning days of the war. The title is somewhat misleading, as three-quarters of the book deals with the events leading up to the 1960s Apollo program in which von Braun's team developed the Saturn V moon rocket. Unfortunately, the final chapters are riddled with numerous inaccuracies, including misnamed astronauts, incorrect launch dates, and other technical errors. The definitive history of von Braun and his group remains Frederick Ordway and Mitchell Sharpe's The Rocket Team. Hardcover.;

Rocket Man: The Story of Robert Goddard
Summary: Author - Thomas Streissguth;
An exploration of the life and discoveries of a pioneer of space travel shows how his research and ideas shaped modern aeronautics, and discusses his experimental failures, as well as his many successes. Streissguth describes Goddard's pioneering efforts to build rockets capable of leaving Earth's atmosphere that would become the basis of modern astronautical engineering. Explaining potentially difficult scientific principles clearly, he paints a vivid portrait of a brilliant but secretive scientist who refused to share his research and persevered in spite of repeated failures. Kids will be amazed to learn the rocket history. Detailed notes provide additional information. Black-and-white photos, a glossary, and a bibliography are supplied. Library Binding;

The Nazi Rocketeers: Dreams of Space and Crimes of War
Summary: Author - Dennis Piszkiewicz;
At first, Wernher von Braun and his fellow German rocket scientists dreamed of exploring space, but they readily embraced the goal of creating weapons during the years of the Third Reich. After the war they encouraged the myth that described them as brilliant visionaries whose genius had been exploited by the Nazi regime. Here, Piszkiewicz tells the real story of the scientists' progression from dreaming of space travel, through the development of the V-2 ballistic missile (built under the direction of the SS using concentration camp slave labor), to the transfer of their technological legacy to the US. The Future of U.S. Rocketry
Summary: Author - Edward Hujsak;
In this book, Author Edward Hujsak listed the status of every launch vehicle that was in service in the mid 1990s as well as proposed vehicles that were being advocated by the private sector. His overview of various launch vehicles runs from the Atlas, Titan, and Shuttle vehicles that were in active use at the time. He noted the strengths and the weaknesses of each launch system. Hujsak also covered proposals for vehicles such as the McDonnell-Douglas DC-X Single Stage to Orbit Concept and the Space Services, Inc./ERR Conestoga solid fueled vehicle. There is even a section on liquid strap on boosters for the Space Shuttle. Unfortunately, financial troubles that began after 2000 wiped out investor interest and the new concepts were dropped. Oct. 1994 Hardcover;

Werhner Von Braun: Space Visionary and Rocket Engineer (Makers of Modern Science)
Summary: Author - Ray Spangeburg, et al;
This is a book that covers the life of Dr. Wernher von Braun. The best part of the book is where the authors cover the years before von Braun became involved with NASA. They do not shy away from his involvement with the German SS and the problems he faced from his past after he moved to the United States, yet they do not paint him as a war criminal as some have attempted to do. If you have heard of Dr. von Braun and have wanted to know more, this is a great introduction to the man and his interesting life. Hardcover;
