Product Review by Darrell D. Mobley

Saturday, April 07, 2007 |
Giant Leap Rocketry leads the industry in innovative new products. Their latest kit, the Elipse, has taken their design paradigm to a new level. According to Ed at Giant Leap, “this design was inspired by the lines of the famous Jaguar XKE. I wanted to create a kit with curves that depart from the same old straight lines found in other rockets.”

February is the dead of Winter in Butte, Montana and that's the perfect opportunity to seek warmer climates. Steve Shannon did just that, by planning a family get-away in the sunnier South, just in time for the Arizona Rocket Gathering. While there, he grabbed a Polecat Aerospace 5.5" Nike Smoke kit for a Winter project and this is its story.

Would someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? |
Editorial by DARRELL D. MOBLEY

Friday, March 09, 2007 |
PLEASE DON'T START A STAMPEDE OR KILL EACH OTHER TRYING TO JUMP THE LINE, but would someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? I know there are plenty of takers that would love the opportunity to tell me where to get off, but I think I must be losing touch with reality here. After all, it wasn't that many years ago when I discovered hobby rocketry on the Internet and founded a similar hobby rocketry portal.

Movie Review: Astronaut Farmer ignites hot-button issues |
Product Review by STEVEN SNYDER, Internet Broadcasting

A strange thing happens on "The Astronaut Farmer's" mad dash for mediocrity: reality comes crashing into his happy story of make-believe and shakes things up. A fantasy about a dreamer who refuses to concede his quest to fly one day into space—going so far as to build a towering rocket ship in his barn—the new film from the Polish brothers (the same pair who brought us "Twin Falls Idaho" and "Northfork") is a fairy-tale for the terrorism age.

There is nothing quite as thrilling as that first certification flight, unless it is your second or third certification such as when going for your Level 2 or Level 3. But Level 1, that first rush, is usually the one that gets its hooks in your soul as well as your wallet. Recently, Mark Willett of Texas, a member of the Austin Area Rocketry Group, enjoyed the thrill of certifying Level 1 himself, and was asked to share about his construction and flight for others to enjoy as well.

Rear-view mirror: Team X-30 flies at LDRS 22 in Argonia |
Project Review by Dave Schaefer
Monday, January 29, 2007 |
At LDRS 22 in Argonia, Kansas, a group of Texas high power rocketeers got together to fly their scale version of the National Aero-Space Plane, the X-30. This unique craft was the United States attempt to build a "single stage to orbit" spacecraft. Real life pilot Dave Schaefer teamed up with several other members from the Dallas Area Rocket Society (DARS) to create high power rocketry's own version of the X-30. Having already launched successfully the previous year, Team X-30 flying at LDRS 22 was a natural.

Are they ready to take the Level 2 certification test? |
A FEW WEEKS AGO, I was talking to a modeler who was getting ready to take the written test portion of the Level 2 high-power rocketry certification. What surprised me was that he didn’t know a lot about the technical or regulatory aspects of the hobby. Basically, he was getting all his knowledge by memorizing the answers in the test “study guide.” To me, this is very scary. But I don’t think that this was the rare exception; as I had a similar experience this past weekend with a different modeler.

Constructing an Audible Beeper |
Often, losing a rocket is a reality for those who fly next to farming crops like soy, corn, alfalfa, etc. An audible beeper may be just the ticket for helping locate your missing rocket should it be gobbled up by the rocket gods hiding in a farmer's field. The following article was designed to help you build an inexpensive audible beeper so you could avoid that from happening to you.

This is a classic Loc kit that is very popular. Many people use it to certify or as their first high power bird. I was drawn to it by it’s large appearance. For someone used to Estes rockets it appears huge. I received it as a Christmas gift and started construction immediately.

HighCarbYen: Jim Jarvis' L3 N-powered carbon fiber screamer |
Jim Jarvis completed his Level 3 certification at LDRS 25 in supreme fashion, flying a 4" minimum diameter carbon fiber rocket on an N4000 to 35,000 feet! This qualified Jim for the Tripoli N altitude record without him even knowing he had accomplished the feat. I asked Jim it if would be possible for us to collaborate on a feature article about his rocket and the flight, knowing the readers here would love such a piece. Being the thorough person that Jim is, he did all the work in order to share his success with everyone.

Website Review: DrSuesRocketWorks.com |

When most rocketeers think of the state of Florida, their mind immediately goes to Cape Canaveral, the launching point used by NASA to compete in the great space race during the 50's and 60's. Certainly that is a very good conclusion to jump to. But Florida is also known for a lot of other things, like being the lightning capital of the world, and Tampa and the surrounding area has become known as the lightning capital of the state!

Argonia International Rocketry Festival |
Second only to LDRS, the annual Airfest at Argonia, Kansas is, as the Kloudbusters would like to put it, the largest rocket launch of the year. This year's Labor Day weekend launch opened at 8:00 AM on Saturday, Sept. 5th. The weather was outstanding. The sun was shining and the winds were light, about 5 mph. In other words big, beautiful blue Kansas skies.
