SAN DIEGO, California USA -- Tripoli San Diego and the Diego Area Rocket Team (DART) are announcing the first regional high power model rocketry event in the Southern California desert: PLASTER BLASTER 2002.
Held in Plaster City, California, a small community 90 miles east of San Diego, Plaster Blaster will be the weekend of October 4 - 6, 2002.
Several special event launches are scheduled. Foremost is the simultaneous launch of 12 scale model V2 rockets on the 60th anniversary of the first flights of the infamous WWII German missile. Despite its unfortunate wartime beginning, V2 rocket technology eventually ushered in modern-day space exploration, including NASA's Apollo moon landings and the current Space Shuttle missions.
These 12 1/6 scale model rockets which are 7'6" tall and 45 pounds in weight will climb to over 10,000 feet on Hypertek® hybrid motors powered by nitrous oxide gas and plastic fuel. As the real V2s did, they will arc back towards the ground but rather than rein terror upon the local desert rattlesnakes they will deploy spectacular recovery parachutes!
Tripoli San Diego will be launching a full scale model of a US ARMY HAWK surface-to-air missile. Stretching over 16 feet in length and weighing over 200 pounds, this behemoth model will be flown on 5 rocket motors and will reach over a mile in altitude.
In the largest attempt of its kind, 200 miniature "Mosquito" rockets will be launched simultaneously as a rocket propelled "swarm". They will be color coded and kids attending will be able to retrieve them and win prizes from event vendors.
DART will be re-enacting a little known facet of the 1960's race to the moon. They will send a 1/87th scale model of the Soviet N-1 Moon Rocket (the USSR's answer to the Saturn V) aloft on a cluster of 30 rocket motors. For added flair, the Soviet national anthem will be played prior the launch.
Launch fees for the 3 day event are $15 for Flyer/Family with paid registration prior to the day of the event. Launch fees paid at the event are $20. Plaster Blaster is open to the public for spectating. RV access and camping is welcome with no additional fees. Ground fires are permitted. ATVs are allowed. Please leash your pets!
Plaster Blaster 2002 is a nationally recognized event sanctioned by both the National Association of Rocketry (NAR) and Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA). The NAR and TRA are national organizations that promote the safe and educational enjoyment of the hobby of sport rocketry and actively set standards for its members. NAR and TRA test and safety certify all motors used at sport rocket launches.
