WORLD WIDE WEB — In a letter sent on June 9th to the rocketry community, John Kyte, the NAR/TRA Legislative Liaison provided the following update to the status of S.724:
- We conferred with Candice Cotton, legislative assistant in Sen. Enzi's office, to ensure that we continue to do exactly what they want us to do.
- We confirmed that a few Judiciary Committee members whose positions were not clear prior to today, will be with us, following Sen. Enzi's lead.
- No positions on possible amendments to S. 724, if there are to be any, have been agreed to either among staff and Members or by NAR/TRA. It is all still quite fluid.
- Additional information was provided to the House Judiciary Committee staff today regarding comments filed on the NPRM, following on from our initial meeting with the House Judiciary staff more than a month ago. As we learned in that initial meeting,. they are concerned about providing a blanket exemption for APCP.
- We were asked by the California Space Authority to address their broader, sister association of state space authorities today in Washington, D.C., on S. 724 and a possible House companion bill. Rep Calvert's (R-CA) staff was also in attendance. We provided a briefing and will continue to work with Rep. Calvert's staff as they develop legislation. They are also in close contact with Sen. Enzi's staff.
- We provided the ATF staff member assigned to Sen. Kohl's office with additional APCP safety information and data, and arranged a briefing for them by NAR Vice President Trip Barber on Wednesday. We may try to turn this onto a Judiciary Committee staff briefing, depending on what the Sen. Enzi staff wants us to do.
- We provided Sen. Enzi another letter of support for his bill as introduced, and also pledging continued NAR and TRA support for his efforts to do what he believes is necessary to enact legislation to protect the future of hobby rocketry in America.
- We confirmed that Thursday's mark-up of S. 724, if it is not held over again, will be very brief.
