WORLD WIDE WEB — The following report for Tuesday, June 10, 2003, was provided by John Kyte, Congressional Liaison for the NAR and TRA:
We met with the Sen Enzi staff several times today, as well as the Sen. Hatch and Sen Kohl Judiciary Committee staffers, and the latest developments are as follows: - It appears DOJ is "educating" (lobbying) Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans in preparation for delivering their "Views" letter tomorrow that will formally lay out their position on the Enzi bill as introduced, These visits are prompting questions from some Committee members which we will seek to address tomorrow.
- NAR Vice President Trip Barber and I will be meeting with the Kohl Judiciary Committee staffers tomorrow to address their continuing concern that APCP is an explosive, dangerous substance. We will provide them with as much third-party and scientific material as possible to dissuade them.
- Discussion with Senate staffers continue on options to amend the Enzi bill, if necessary, but nothing has been agreed to.
- Holding the bill over for another week may be an option, but there is no guarantee we can do that.
- ATF is apparently claiming to have evidence of a few dozen incidents involving rocket motors and people trying to turn APCP into a bomb or destructive device. We will pursue this tomorrow. It does not appear that any of these attempts were successful, which may help prove our point.
IMPORTANT: It is NOT necessary or helpful for members to take action at this time. We will inform members as soon as possible should letters, calls and/or faxes become necessary. As John provides updates and further developments, I'll pass them along here. |
