In a recent development in the regulatory environment surrounding hobby rocketry, the various model and high power rocketry organizations have been seeking to schedule a meeting in Washington D.C. with representatives from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF). Schedules have finally been coordinated and there is now a date set for the meeting.
The meeting will be held on February 4, 1999. Mark Bundick, President of the National Association of Rocketry, will attend representing the NAR, Pat Miller, Chairman of the NFPA Committee on Pyrotechnics, will attend representing the NFPA Sport Rocketry Task Force, Mike Platt, President of the High Power Rocketry Manufacturers and Dealers Association, will attend representing HPRMADA, and Bruce Kelly, President of the Tripoli Rocketry Association, will attend representing TRA.
Their purposes for this meeting are: - to clarify issues of licensing and storage for high power rocket motors,
- to discuss the proposals made last year to establish a special interest "hobby" license with lower fees,
- to become involved with the regulatory process that will establish how the ATF will deal with high power rocketry issues,
- to determine if we can get any regulatory relief under current federal statutes,
- to determine if we can get any regulatory relief through Congress with the assistance of the ATF, and;
- and to determine what we may do to get regulatory relief through Congress without the assistance of the ATF, if necessary.
More information will be post as it comes available. |
