EL DORADO DRY LAKE, Nevada USA -- Springfest '99 saw the release of the Shadow Composites RAVEN 40mm minimum diameter carbon rocket kit.
Attendees were also witness to the amazing MACH 2.2 flight of the first production RAVEN, flying on the amazing Kosdon J975, and equipped with ALTACC electronics from Black Sky Research for successful dual deployment. We are pleased to announce that the RAVEN is now a reality as evidenced by the two photos of the RAVEN below. The first photo shows the rocket next to the mighty Kosdon J975 motor, 29" of 38mm. motor. The second photo shows the RAVEN with the nose cone off, and the recovery system.
The final configuration of the RAVEN is:
Overall Length:  Airframe: - 40mm. I.D. Custom Filament Wound Carbon High Temp. Epoxy matrix
Fins: - Three .055" Pre Preg Vac Bagged carbon sheet, pre cut and notched
Launch Lugs: - 2-5/16" carbon tube lugs with custom streamlined lug standoffs cast from non-oil based urethane.
Nose Cone: - 8" shoulder length Von Karmann profile, cast from non-oil based urethane
- The cone is solid, and its' weight adds 4% to the overall altitude performance of the RAVEN.
Motor Retention: - AEROPACK Quick Change 38mm motor retention system
Recovery: - Rocketman R24d Drogue chute,
- 8' of Kevlar 5/8" recovery strap,
- Special Nomex/Kevlar Blend Blast Shield,
- Carbon split sleeve attachment to airframe,
- all internal.
Special Ceramic heat insulation, resistant to 2300 degrees F., lines motor area to keep heat from fin area. Special ceramic adhesive included. Custom 500 degree resistant epoxy kits (2) included for fin reinforcement, with carbon tissue overlay material for fillets also included. Comprehensive 10 page instructional booklet with finishing hints, suppliers, and other goodies included.
The RAVEN has been extensively tested (Prototype #1 has 24 flights on it, all perfect) in real world launches and in RockSim 4.0 and Silicon Graphics/Alias Studio computer simulation.
The RAVEN sells for $229.00, California customers add 7.75% sales tax, all orders add $8.00 for shipping and handling.
 We have also decided to make available a limited amount of the airframe tubes used in the RAVEN. They sell for $75.00, and the cast 40mm nosecone is available for $11.00. Same shipping cost as above.
IMPORTANT: The RAVEN is being produced in a limited run of 30 kits. Please contact us as to remaining stock. If interest in the 40mm tube is good, we will consider production of larger diameters, and perhaps larger diameter kits.
Dual deployment kits will be available for the RAVEN, to be custom designed and produced so as to meet each owner's electronics and chute preferences.
