ImageCRAWFORDVILLE, Indiana USA — Students from Tuttle Middle School had the opportunity to put the concepts they learned in the classroom into action Friday morning in Milligan Park.

Close to 100 rockets were launched at Baldwin Field. Tuttle eighth grade science teacher Karen Thada said that the students had been studying astronomy and physics in the classroom.

All the lessons culminated Friday when students setup up their rockets on the launch pad in the left field grass. Thada said that this was the 10th year that classes have been building rockets and launching them.

"We wanted to get them excited about astronomy and Newton's Third Law," said Thada.

The launch pad draws power from a car battery, Thada said. She said that five rockets are able to be hooked up for launch at a time, though they are launched one at a time.

Thada said that students were given the option of building rockets individually or with a partner for Friday's launch. She added that students were given two class periods to construct their rockets.

Audranna Potter, one of the students, said that she never thought she could have built a rocket and make it fly. She said that her team needed a little extra time out of class to finish the rocket.

"It took us three days to build ours," Potter said.

Before every launch, the students started their countdown at five seconds. When the countdown reached one, each student pressed the button to send their rocket into the wild blue yonder.

"It was a lot of fun getting our rocket to fly," said Potter.
