Page 2 of 4 This chapter deals with preparing the flash bulb for use in the ejection charge. We will straighten the wire leads, attach the bulbs to wire leads with a wire wrap tool and get it ready to go into the holder. | Prepping the bulb Using a small pair of needle nose pliers, straighten the leads of the bulbs out perfectly straight. Work carefully with the bulb leads, they are somewhat fragile. | | The result This is what you want the bulb to look like when you are finished. | | Charge leads Using your side cutters, cut off a length of the solid conductor wire long enough for your application. Your charge may be in the bottom of an airframe, consequently needing to be 24" to 36" long, or it may be a short lead to an ejection charge holder of 12". Too long is better than too short. Snip the double wire on one end about 3/4" up the center of the two wires, then strip the ends of each wire removing about 1/2" of the insulation. | | Wire wrapping The wire wrap tool has a hole in the middle and a slot along the outside edge. It is meant to put a wire in the outside slot and wrap it around a terminal post inserted into the middle hole. For our use, insert one of the stripped wire ends into the center hole. Then insert a flash bulb lead into the outer slot. Gently twist on the wire wrap tool to wrap the flash bulb lead around the wire, slowly withdrawing the tool from the wrapped joint. If you do not withdraw the tool evenly, you could end up twisting the joint in two. Repeat for the other wire and lead. | | Finished look This is what it should look like when you are finished. | | Next shot Gently bend the wires so the double counductor wire and the twisted joint are pointing down away from the flash bulb. Then, using your needle nose pliers, double the twisted joint over and crimp closed. |
