ARGONIA, Kansas USA — KLOUDBusters, the host organization for LDRS 27, is pleased to announce that we have obtained the official Certification of Waiver from the FAA for the period August 28, 2008 through September 2, 2008 for our launch site near Argonia, KS.
The waiver permits flight operations to an altitude of 50,000’ AGL for the stated period for all hours of operation. Fliers are reminded that all flights planned in excess of 25,000’ AGL must obtain prior approval from the Tripoli Board of Directors for their project. The application for 25K+ flights may be found at the following URL: http://www.tripoli.org/documents/25KApplication.pdf

If you have not seen it yet the registration page for LDRS27 is now open.

Got my registration made, I just have to decide whether to stay in a tent

Me too--as to tent vs rv vs motel. Anyone familiar with the late summer conditions we can expect in Argonia?

Its mud, rain, and dust I'm worried about--wasn't there a recent launch out there where it was like 12" deep mud everywhere.? Just a fluke?

Re: KLOUDBUSTERS announce 50,000 foot waiver for LDRS 27
Does each and every flyer of a motor over 62.5g need to have a LEUP? I only ask because that is how it is enforced in some parts of the country. If you show up at LDRS and it is NOT enforced that way, either everyone is committing a felony, or the ATF is not enforcing the law, or the law does not require it, and those being subjected to that practice locally are being "over-enforced" and their rights violated, a cause of action.
Also a couple of years ago at the PGI (fireworks) convention ATF did an extraordinary thing. They showed up (for the first time), set up check points, a sign-in area, and told all persons who transported home made stuff they had to check it directly into a magazine provided, it could be discharged at the show, but everybody who did do that (TRA-EX equivalent), had to sign a notice they were in violation and further similar acts would be enforced most vigerously. Refusing to sign the notice resulted in immediate arrest. Trying to avoid the checkpoint resulted in the offer of sign or arrest. Needless to say this was a major historical destruction of this country's pyrotechnic artisans. Rocketeers are clearly next.
So much for "getting out the mixers" for a rocket event hosted by an allegedly HPR club, focused on pre-manufactured consumer products compliant with NFPA-1127, of which EX clearly is not.

Jerry,
I have contact info for Bob Brown. Maybe you can ask him directly. I assume a buddy system will be in effect, but calling attention to inconsistencies is likely gonna do no one any favors. If we get presented with a worst case scenario, where any and all need Leups, attendance will drop like a stone. If someone is looking for relief from an overzealous enforcement, than let them bring it up after the launch. My 2 cents worth: If this is a happily snoozing dog, why kick it?

Looking back 30 years, the average temperature in August in that part of Kansas (Wellington) is mid 70's, with the average high temp about 86 and the average low temp about 63. Average precip. is 3.5 inches each for the months of August and September. May and June get more precipitation.

That's exactly what I asked Chuck Rogers and Dane Boles in 1991.

Sounds good. Will there also be an extension launch button so people can actually launch their own rockets? You can call it Jerry's launch button since it would be new. Can photogs be close enough for "the shot"?

Jerry,
Will you be attending and therefore an actual vs hypothetical query is being floated here. The humor is great, but I have never been close to a launch button at LDRS, yet had some good help from friends re the photography. This wasn't close
(apo deploy at close to 17,000')
but this was if you're the guy in the BG

Re: KLOUDBUSTERS announce 50,000 foot waiver for LDRS 27
Maybe I'll come to LDRS as a lowly member of some team. If I am not escorted off on arrival like LDRS-Lucerne.
Myself, I have more to fear from TRA than ATF. TRA falsely accused me of NEVER filing FAA waivers and ejected #12. My ATF permit was surrendered, not revoked. 55.141-a-8 (now 555). You know, according to Fed DC 00-273 (RBW).
Freeform rocketry is more than a goal. It is a lifestyle.

Re: KLOUDBUSTERS announce 50,000 foot waiver for LDRS 27
he's good--name is Ray LaPanse--strictly amateur with a getting up there in cost Nikon--what I thought remarkable was its a 4 to 5 fps still shot camera and the timing was impeccable. Wish my luck that day went further. Cracked a coupler on landing and so no L3.
His son Chris reminds me a bit of you, we belong to some of the same clubs--very smart, cheeky, and a photographic memory for any rocket related data. He is pursuing a double engr degree at CU-Boulder (U of Colorado) in aerospace and ME. But he unlike either of us, is a young, law abiding, model citizen.

William,
There certainly are advantages to both staying onsite and staying in a hotel. Last year at AIRFest, we had highs in the 80's. At other Airfest's it has been slightly warmer (very, very unlikely to exceed 100 degrees), cooler and, yes, four years ago, a little wet.
Historically, several of us have camped out one or two nights at AIRFest and really enjoyed ourselves. However, from my point of view, there is nothing like a hot shower and a warm bed. The host hotel will provide that and much more.
Besides clean and comfortable rooms, the Best Western Wichita Airport has a outstanding restaurant (and bar) onsite. The $74/night entitles you to a free, cooked breakfast each morning. The hotel has an enclosed, air conditioned atrium which I'm sure will be a busy meeting location after hours to enjoy the company of your fellow flyers. It will be the site of the members banquet Saturday night. Even though I live in Wichita, I'll be staying there to take advantage of the comaraderie.
For more information about the hotel, go to www.ldrs27.org and click on the accommodations button.
See you in August,
Bob Brown
