SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, California USA — ShadowAero is pleased to announce the new PHOENIX for 75mm motors. Due to the success of the recently sold-out Raven3 and BlackBird production, the new PHOENIX kit has become a reality.
Our loyal customers have been waiting a few years for a ShadowAero product capable of the extreme performance of the PHOENIX, and I am glad to finally bring it to market. "With the Kosdon 7600ns motor in this rocket, it makes for some wild flights!" states Dave Triano, ShadowAero principal. The PHOENIX specifications: - 84" long
- 3" ID autoclave cured carbon/epoxy airframe and couplers
- .25" autoclave cured carbon bulkheads
- .25" autoclave cured fins, beveled on leading and trailing edges
- fins pre-attached using ShadowAero proprietary fin attachment, autoclave cured
- custom configured (dual deployment, single "all out the front" deploy, etc.)
- 24" aluminized urethane high temp nosecone in our proprietary shape, tailored for transonic performance, just like our professional project cones, with internal carbon bulkhead pre-installed (an AMAZING cone...)
- 1/2" pre-assembled KEVLAR recovery bridles (2) with NOMEX blast shields
- custom Rocketman apogee streamer and main parachute
- ShadowAero proprietary carbon recovery bridle anchors (3)
- ShadowAero proprietary acrylic adhesive (2)
- Acme conformal rail guides (although we strongly advise tower launching)
- custom "Silver Carbon" graphics
- perfect for 75mm 7600ns motors
- total weight minus motor: about 6 pounds.
Delivery will begin 03/01/08, first come, first shipped. Price is US $949.00, $40.00 shipping. A $500.00 non-refundable deposit secures your production spot. For additional information, contact Dave Triano at

Re: ShadowAero releases new 75mm Phoenix carbon fiber kit
I like the competition between two good CF rocket companies.
The 75mm has a couple of features I like. Pre-attached fins. Dual deployment option (mandatory). Where is the pre-specified and mounted electronics package?
These wussies really think anybody could be bothered with a mere 7600ns 75mm motor? Go big. Go 12800 N 1700-FS-P (7.5 KS 383). Either neutral or better, 100% progressive. 190 ISP.

Cool nosecone. I assume it is painted. Aluminized Urethane is gray, it would be awesome if it came that way out of the box chrome looking. I am not sure I understand why a plastic nosecone on a high end rocket?

Bob- Some urethane with aluminum fillers is good to 500°F.

Re: ShadowAero releases new 75mm Phoenix carbon fiber kit
$989 Shipped? Great looking rocket and wow, only 6 lbs, but $989 shipped I think I'd personally rather spend the money on mandrels, aluminum plates and raw materials to make my own fins and tubes that I can keep reproducing for that kind of money. I'm not doubting the quality or performance one bit, but $989, that's kinda like spending $600 on an N2700BB when I can make my own for about $130. But that's just me. That's my love of rocketry, learning how to do and make things myself I'm sure there are folks on both sides of this fence.

Re: ShadowAero releases new 75mm Phoenix carbon fiber kit
Carbon fiber's gone up since I last bought any ( about 3-4 years ago) & now You'll spend at least $130.00 if not double that on Carbon alone.
The last I checked it's up around $60.00 ( Correction: I misread you statement I thought you were saying a $130.00 for CF) a yard for first quality.
A very nice kit , but out of my price range & launch site as well.
Some of the locals that live around our field are getting greedy & are now expecting hefty rewards for them stealing our rockets, but that's another subject all together....

Re: ShadowAero releases new 75mm Phoenix carbon fiber kit
I brought a CF rocket (54mm) to the last LDRS I attended. Must have been about 1995 or so. The year TRA changed S&T to that girl who refused to accept HYBRIDS from me for cert on shipment claims. THIN CF tube, fins, coupler, nose cone.
I guess the main point is I had CF rockets at LDRS before anyone and with the recent product announcements, I feel they are impressive enough to buy them both.
They do need motors not readily available in the current highly crippled market.

Re: ShadowAero releases new 75mm Phoenix carbon fiber kit
Carbon fiber is $31.75 a yard (50" wide) plus shipping. I built a 75mm min dia out of 1.5 yards including the nose cone. I used .093 G10 for the fins. I got just over 35K with a M650 at XPRS. I figured it cost me maybe $100 to build. Telling people I made it all myself..priceless.

Re: ShadowAero releases new 75mm Phoenix carbon fiber kit
Tony,
How many wraps do you do on your tubes & where do you get your CF from?
I vacuumed bagged ( poor man's vacuum saver routine) a 3" phenolic tube in CF back about 3 years ago as an experiment & it came out ok. I have a nice 30" 1.5" Al tube I want to use as a mandrel for a 38mm CF tube rocket .

SJ, I feel the same way about the joy of making parts and have a garage full of tools I have bought in the self-delusionary belief all of them would eventually see dbl duty. Ha! Expediency and rationalization for their sole purpose: making rocket parts.
Its not that i couldn't turn pens on the midi lathe or build simple furniture. But so far hasn't happened. One of the NCR members, Mike Bennett, who has a great web site BTW, flew a scratch rocket at a recent Research launch. What was special was that the entire rocket was built from scratch; Mike built the altimeter, turned the motor case, made FG molds for the NC, sewed the chute and brewed his own propellant--along with all of the more mundane fabrication we usually consider scratch building. That you have to tip a hat to IMHO. So I get the love affair youi're talking about.
But Jerry has a very good point. This isn't your Dad's Olds--these are aeroapace grade parts--any idea what a hydraulic press or autoclave costs? Or even shipping on the pre-peg CF? I don't want to rain on anyones parade, but most of this stuff is just out of reach for the average garage DIY'er. Good question is whether is has to be this good? Well as Jerry again pointed out, these are both begging for extraordinary motors to really peg their potential performance. Certainly not for everyone, and could a decent knock-off be made a lot cheaper? Yea, sure, but it would be more like a Corvette instead of a McClaren.

So, as not to hijack this thread I started a new thread in the high power rocketry section

I understand what is needed to make these babies and despite having all the tools, consider those prices "fair" for what you get. I also factor in the benefit of having a supplier at the ready to ship a product. That has value.
Heck you could get one of those rockets and fly it at the local launch with three 29mm Warp-9 motors, so you get both bragging rights and child class motor access.

Plastics with metal fillers can be polished, so that nosecone probably comes looking just like it does in the picture.

To bad, but no aluminum filled urethane is gray, I have used it and there is no way posible of getting it to look like chrome without chrome paint.

How bout some graphite powder in the mix--boat makers swear it reduces drag. Maybe enuf to get a gunmetal gray color?
