News Release by Trojan Rocket Motors
Monday, January 28, 2008

ImageLAKE HAVASU CITY, Arizona USA — Trojan Rocket Motors, in cooperation with Contrail Rockets is pleased to announce that as of January 22, 2008, the first 15 Trojan hybrid rocket motors were submitted to the Tripoli Motor Testing Committee (TMT) for product certification.

Tripoli Motor Testing is now back testing motors according to Paul Holmes, TMT Chairman.  Paul Holmes has stated that TMT will look to test the motors which have been submitted the third weekend of February (15-17th), 2008.

Trojan Rocket Motors, along with Contrail Rockets, has patiently awaited this notice from TMT that they will begin testing hybrids again at their location.  Along with the Trojan Rocket Motors which were submitted earlier this week, TMT has been holding five other Contrail Motors, which are to be certified for the current Contrail 54mm hardware line.

Trojan Rocket Motors has been anxiously awaiting this announcement so that we can also announce the first Trojan Rocket Motors promotion.  The promotion, which is to begin on January 28, 2008 will allow for customers who have been anxiously awaiting the release of these Trojan hybrid motors to get an amazing deal on the hardware and reloads.

For the single nozzle 54mm hardware set, the purchase of five 54mm reloads at $33.00/each + $15.00 shipping gets you five reloads plus the hardware at no charge.  To receive the extra nozzle with the hardware, customers can purchase seven 54mm reloads rather than five.

The 75mm promotion is similar in that purchasing four reloads gets you the hardware at no cost, and purchasing six reloads get the hardware with both nozzle sizes.

Trojan 54mm reloads are priced at $33.00 each.

Trojan 75mm reloads are priced at $90.00 each.

These packages are priced aggressively for customers who are looking to be first adopters of the Trojan hardware.  All hardware and reloads will be shipped via USPS Priority Mail immediately upon TMT’s certification announcement.

There is a limited number of 54mm and 75mm hardware and reloads available at these prices.  Once these initial packages are sold, this promotion will no longer be available.

Isn't Trojan the same as "rubber"?

Aren't these the hybrids so very similar to the Hypertek line?

Close. They are the hybrids that use Hypertek tanks.

That said, let's be real here.

They have uber low fuel prices. Bad business plan.

Those use standard tanks and thus are more "commodity driven".

They retain all the on-field labor intensive aspects of all hybrids including Trojan, Contrail, Hypertek, West Coast, RATT rocks, and even the refused U.S. Rockets hybrids, the first hybrids tendered to TRA TMT ever.

I was glad to see TRA back in the saddle certing hybrids. I hope Ed W and Alpha Hybrids (among the more user friendly hybrids I've seen) are ready to go here soon as well..

Doesn't NFPA1125 8.2.3 require passing certification before a rocket motor can be offered for sale?

Wouldn't a potential customer be more likely to order if there was some indication of performance given?

While it is a good deal for someone interested in the product, I can't see anyone ordering without more information than is provided.

Am I way off base??

I don't think you are off-base. Some range of impulse and average thrust would be nice. I understand if they are waiting for the TMT results to actually choose a designation for each motor, but they MUST have some kind of idea how they will test out.

A number of questions have arose here on some of the forums, as well as in private phone and e-mail conversations about the Trojan Motor Hardware and Reloads.

I will cover some of the questions in this post…

Question 1: “Will I be able to purchase Hypertek style tanks, for Trojan motors through Contrail or Trojan Motors?”

Answer: No, there are no plans now or in the future for Contrail or Trojan to offer the reduced diameter Hypertek tanks. The Systems are designed to use the tanks which are already in the field being used, or going unused. Customers who are new to Hybrids would be better suited purchasing a Contrail style motor rather than the Trojan Motor and HT Tank Separately.

Question 2: “What performance can be expected from the Trojan Line of Motors?”

Answer: The Trojan Line of motors will have performance as follows.
54mm 300cc, 440cc and 825cc Motors will have Average Impulse numbers as follows:
Slow (3/16 Injector) 175 N-250 N Average Impulse
Medium (1/4 Injector) 275 N-350N Average Impulse
Fast (5/16 Injector) 500-600 N Average Impulse
X-Fast (3/8 Injector  Not Yet Submitted to TMT) 700-800 N Average Impulse

75mm 1685 and 2800cc Motors will have average impulse numbers as follows:
Slow (1/4 Injector) 300-375 N Average Impulse
Medium (5/16 Injector) 550-675 N Average Impulse
Fast (3/8 Injector) 725-850 N Average Impulse
X-Fast (S Injector  Not Yet Submitted to TMT) 900-1100 N Average Impulse

Total Impulse Number of the 54mm Hardware will vary based on tank size, fuel type, injector used, and temperature.

The Trojan Motors were designed to be competitive with the Hypertek line of motors. Customers will find that the lower average impulse motors will give higher total impulse numbers. The 54mm Line of motors using the Black Smoke Fuel (submitted to TMT) at 70* F will achieve a total impulse of I-K Motors (Similar to HT Motors).

Similar Information can be expected for the 75mm line of motors. 75mm Motors will fall in the L Impulse range.

Customers looking for a high total impulse grain configuration will be happy to learn that the Platinum Performance Fuel will be submitted in the Trojan Line of Motors shortly.

Question 3: Motor Designations are not yet available, when can we expect them?

Answer: TMT will post certification information once they have certified the hardware and reloads. TMT bases motor certifications on 3 fires of each motor designation. Trojan Rockets will post all information to the Trojan Hybrids website as soon as it is received from TMT.

Question 4: The Trojan Website looks empty, when can we expect updates?

Answer: Expect some updates In the coming week, with detailed photo’s, instruction manuals, videos etc. By the time of motor certification the website will be a fully functioning site.

Question 5: Can I order individual hardware at this time without the promotion?

Answer: No. At this time the only available items are in the promotion.

I'm afraid that adds confusion. You seem to be using the term average impulse when you really mean average thrust. Also, as I'm sure you understand better than me, the units for average thrust are N (not Ns, which stands for Newton second, which truly is the unit for impulse)

So, for instance, in the line "Slow (3/16 Injector) 175 Ns-250 Ns Average"
do you really mean to say 175 N - 250 N average thrust or are you saying that the range of impulses for motors assembled with that size injector will be from 175 Ns to 250 Ns, depending on tank size. I cannot believe the latter as that would put it into an H range.

p.s. I still grin at the memory of your Contrails M in my rocket in Canada a few years ago!

Steve, you are correct Adjustments made.

Also, a few other questions which have came up...

"How to become a dealer"

Answer: "Anyone looking to become a dealer of the Trojan Line please contact This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it for more information"

Dealer Information will be gone over at that time offline.

Question 2: "Are Sparky reloads coming out for the Trojan line?"
Answer: "If there is enough interist and customers don't mind a lower total impulse motor it is possible. They may be geared more to the larger motors as well..."

One question I have, well two, what features do the Trojans have that reduce the hassle factor? Secondly with what avionics have they been tested. While I appreciate the unending back and forth search for equilibrium inherent to an external passive oxidizer feed, seems some of the hybrids are worse in this respect than others. How fare yours?

I can't speak for the Trojans (or for Tom and Tom) but I can tell you this. I did my L3 in 2005 on a Contrails motor and I could not detect any of the thrust surging that is so detectable in some motors. The motor sounded like a solid motor with a bit of a whistle to boot. It was great! I would hope that the Trojans exhibit a similar characteristic.

I used a G-Wiz MC and Missile Works RRC2 for my electronics and both functioned perfectly.

Looking it up I believe so. They have to be certified even before 'exposing' them for sale.

Between going back to school and running another business I'm hoping to have them ready for MHM. Right now they are 95% complete. I just want to get everything certified at one time instead of multiple certification sessions.

It is very hard choosing what fuel combos to certify and what ones not to certify. Right now I'm looking at 3 different ones.

Whats the story on alpha hybrids ? Are they similar to the hybrid Aerotech put out years ago ? I have tried contacting them through their website several times over the last year and a half but no replies.

I hope to see something on them soon.

They may be. From the Alpha Hybrids blog, I found this statement:

"If one wishes to purchase another 440cc flight tank and injector so that multiple flights can be done in a day without having to bring a bigger supply tank they will be $50 for the set."

So they must have a way to contain the nitrous in the tank/injector until ignition. Personally, I would like to see this type of hybrid on the market as it opens up the world of staging to self-contained hybrids, like the old AeroTech units did. I would also like to see AeroTech bring their hybrids back to market.

Thanks John for pointing me here. The hybrids are similar to the old Aerotech hybrids. You fill a tank with a specified mass of nitrous oxide and then you mate that to the case immediately before flight. The one great thing is that you can have a few prefilled cylinders ready so you can fly w/o having to fill in the field. I prefer to fill at home because it is much more controlled environment. The injectors come with the tank so that you don't have to rebuild them - you can put a new one in and fly. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

Edward, how does you nitrous release work? The old AeroTech hybrids used a black powder pyrovalve. Are you using something similar, or a burst-disk?

I use a injector I developed that works very fast and doesn't require a special BP pellet like the Aerotech ones did. It also atomizes the nitrous very nicely so that it is a smoother burn.

Basically it is a piston driven system. It is hard to explain here - and I really don't want to publish it either before the motors are out. There is a piston and when you light the preheater which is 3 pyrodex pellets the piston opens and injects into the motor. It is a part that is re-usable.

Is it over 62.5g?

We already know BATFE considers ALL propellants deflagrating explosives, physics aside.

I've often thought of publishing how the injector works as open source, and I likely will after I cert them. Though the only manufacturer that I would be concerned about blatantly copying the design said they won't do prefills, so I guess I wouldn't have that issue. And yes, the injector is way below 62.5 grams, and the user supplies the needed parts.
