News Release by NSL2008 Planning Committee
Tuesday, February 26, 2008

ImageWORLD WIDE WEB — The online registration for the National Association of Rocketry's National Sport Launch 2008 is now officially open on the NSL2008 website.  Payments can be made online via PayPal or a mail-in form completed for personal checks and money orders.

Launch fees for the entire three days of the event is $35, with two day and one day fees running $30 and $15 respectively.  Juniors without an adult flier are $5 per day, the Saturday night launch is $5.  Commemorative T-shirts run from adult small through 3XL, and priced at $19 through XL, with 2XL and 3XL running $21.50.  Range box stickers are just $2.

All pre-registrants will receive a free raffle ticket, so register now and get not only a low price but a change to win a raffle prize.

NSL2008 T-shirts will be printed to the preorders, so only a limited number will be made for on-site sales — order now if you do not want to chance not getting one.

The event's primary motor vendor, Sky High Rocketry, and two other vendors have been posted to the Vendor's page, so be sure to check that out on the NSL2008 website.

Newbie question here. I notice that the motor order form instructions say that you must submit your LEUP copy to even place an order. I thought that only the cert was required to purchase a motor for use on-site at an event?

It depends on the motor vendor. There are a few ways that on-site motor vendors handle selling HPR motors. The first, and easiest for them, is to require a LEUP and just sell (distribute) the motor directly to you. Once the sale is over, their involvement is over. If the motor is not used, you are responsible for transportation and storage. The second option is that the vendor sells you the service of launching your rocket. They maintain possession and control of the motor (it is not distributed) and are a part of your flight team. If the motor is not used, they return it to their magazine and return your launch service fee.

It appears that the on-site vendor for this launch is choosing option #1.

Will,
As I understand it, ATF says that motors may not legally be sold onsite at these events. They can be sold in advance to LEUP holders (if they are larger than 62.5g APCP) and then delivered onsite. If you find a person with a LEUP, that person can preorder motors for you and take ownership of them. Then you can fly them under the supervision of that person. That doesn't mean that person needs to watch your every move.

A couple of additional vendors have been added. One of them is specifically stating that they will sponsor flights. Not sure about the details - check the website for contact info and follow up with that vendor. If that doesn't work post here asking for local fliers who are willing to order and hold motors for you and sponsor your flights.

The official NSL hotel is 10 miles from the launch site. Anyone familiar with the Orangeburg site knows there is a Days Inn across the highway. Has the Days Inn deteriorated so badly that it is a bad choice to use? Both have wireless Internet, so that isn't a point for comparison, but shabby rooms are. Granted, there is no real food options at 301 & 26, so you end up having to drive 10 miles to eat anyway.

Any recommendations one way or the other would be appreciated.

The Days Inn is a roach motel. When we stayed there 2 years ago they never made up our room the one day, gave us sheets and here ya go. Figure that night should be free, nope. We got maybe 1/2 off if that, i forget. A party was being held at the pool by some local college (I think) so it was overrun kids with foul language and my kids were being offered drugs in the parking lot. Just a bad experience overall. Complained to Days Inn they basically told me it was independently own and the weren't going to do anything. The short drive is worth it.
