News Release by ROCKETS Magazine
Friday, February 29, 2008

GAITHERSBURG, Maryland USA — Rockets Magazine and VooDoo Digital have released two new DVD sets: a 2-disc set of Tripoli's annual experimental launch, BALLS 16, held September 28-30 2007 at the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, and NYPower 12, held July 27-29, 2007 at Geneseo, New York.

The Tripoli launch is summed up in one word: Balls. If you fly high-power rockets, you know what it means. If you have been to the Black Rock Desert as a spectator, your pulse will quicken. If you have flown there in the past, you might start to break out in a cold sweat. If this year was your first time to fly a project on the Playa, you have just jumped from the biggest cliff that high-power rocketry has to offer.

The twelfth edition of NYPOWER was held in Geneseo, New York, over the summer of 2007. With help from the Historic Air Group and the Monroe Astronautical Rocket Society, this classic rocketry event held memories for those who attended. This video will give everyone a little insight into the pad experiences and a slowed version of the flights not available from the flight line.

I was home sick today and just finished watching the BALLS 16 video. For someone like me that has never been to the any of the big desert launches out West it was a real treat to watch. There were many cool successful projects included along with some spectacular shreds and cato's as well. My apologies to the the full scale Nike Smoke builder & flier . I don't want to give any other details away to spoil the end result for anyone that has not viewed this yet.
My only complaint with the production is the cheesy "porn style" music that seems to make it's way on any kind of hobby videos today no matter if they be rockets, motorcycles, skate/snowboarding. Message to all video makers, Leave the horrible music tracks off the videos! I myself would rather hear the entire motor burn or even bystanders comments as the action takes place.

I finally got to see the NYPOWER video last night.I liked the production of this one much better than the BALLS version with much less cheesy music. I'm definitely going to try and make it to this launch when ever they host it in the coming year.
For you Dumas Bro fans they got a ton of coverage in this edition and they had many cool projects with the "Knobs Revenge" being my personal favorite launch from this video. My condolences to DumasBro2 for his recovery problems .
For you folks that attended did Mark Hanna's L3 go through some glass on it's landing or was that just a added sound affect? From the video it looked like it landing on top of the van with the chute going over the power lines but I couldn't see and glass flying.

It really didn't take 3 days to dig the cone out of the ground Marks rocket did break a van window and hang on the power line. I think the glass breaking sound was addedfor effect . Hope you can make the trek this year.

And yes the rocket draped over the electrical line and pendulum swung into the window shattering it and denting a door. It was the landowners vehicle.

Good job! How many extra points did you get for that?

Ouch. Did the vehicle get electrified or did the rocket let go around that same time?

We didn't touch anything to find out. Final recovery was done by the utility company.

Understood - that is the only smart way to go. I was really curious if there was any obvious electrical issue like burning or sparks. The utility company must have been a lot more prompt than they can be here. We've had them tell us that it will be a day before they can get out in the past.
