Anyone with any experience with these motors yet? I know they are pre-certification but seemingly soon to be available. I have a buddy with a hammerhead tank for hypertek. He doesn't fly it much because of the fuss that it takes to make it work.

I have no experience with them. However I am also considering Trojan and Contrail Hybrids. The only glitch I see is the pyrodex GSE requires a 24 volt
system to fire the resistor ignitors. So if you depend on a club's GSE make sure it will support a 24 volt system.

I hope you meant the Hypertek GSE...

I think he meant the Contrail Rocketry GSE, which uses a resistor in a pyrodex pellet and 24 volts.

Oh, duh Darrell.

Sounds like a good candidate for Edward's diodes.

A bare nichrome wire on 22g shooters wire will light a pyrodex pellet reliably on 12v. Obviously, it has to be in contact with the pyrodex pellet but the same is true of the resistor, and a little electrical tape goes a long way. I quit using the resistors because I got sick of lugging the extra battery.

A Smallish Igniter, an e-match, Nichrome wrapped around the pyrodex pellets then ending in lead wire to get out the nozzle, or anything that will get to the auto-Ignition temp of Pyrodex will work.

Don't over do it. It takes very little. All you want to do is get the pellet lit and let it do the work. There's no need to cram a huge Igniter up in there.

The Contrail System is really nice. I own the full 54mm set, and am very pleased with it. The selection of motors is great, and very soon many more are coming out for the 54's including the Platinum Performance fuels.

If you have access to the clubs GSE that, and a bottle is all you need. I have the full GSE myself. I have the Contrail GSE made for the 24v Resistors. I like the resistors becasue they are cheap. However, if I want to just load and go, and can carry a tank out to a regular high power pad, and use a 12v system just like any other HPR rocket. No special boxes, or gaseous O2 needed. Just a simple , but effective Ignition.

Those Contrails come off the pad HARD too. On top fo that, they have Sparky loads, and different performance fuels. See my Avatar for an example. That is a J416 54mm Sparky in 9.333 foot Rocket on it's way to 3,883 feet. The rocket plume was solid all the way to 15 feet before it tailed off into sparks. It doesn't get anymore awesome than that.
