HONOLULU, Hawaii USA — For the first time, Hawaii is competing in one of the largest model rocket contests in the world. The team from St. Andrews Priory School is hoping come home champions.
And what they are trying to accomplish isn't easy. Take a look. The team of eight is already hard at work preparing for nationals. With the big day just weeks away, Toka Beech and her teammates are doing everything they can to ensure a perfect launch on competition day. "Hopefully what we want to do get it to the right height and the right time," said TARC team leader Toka Beech. Their mission is a challenging one. To launch this rocket as close to 750 feet, with a total flight time of 45 seconds and return two unbroken raw eggs. "These girls have put in, as I said they put a lot of love in to that rocket," said Dr. Jacob Hudson, TARC coach and science teacher at St. Andrews Priory. A lot of love, months of preparation, team work and a whole lot of trial and error. "We pretty much just plugged in different values for stuff, fin size, fin design, parachute size, mass we just started ran it, changed value, ran it again and saw what works best and wound up with what we have now," Beech said. The Team American Rocketry Challenge was established back in 2002 to encourage students from across the nation to study math and science and pursue careers in aerospace. "This definitely made me more interested in rocketry. One of our juniors wants to be an astronaut, Danica, you have a wide range of people," Beech said. And their coach couldn't be more proud. "Whenever they're prepping it for a flight, you'll see that they are very serious about it," Hudson said. After several "not so good" launches, their final lift-off was a complete success. Mission accomplished. The team will be headed to plains, Virginia in May to face off with 100 teams nationwide for the Team America title. Copyright © 2008, KGMB9 News.
