Flaming projectile seen near plane after takeoff CLEVELAND, Ohio USA — The FBI is investigating an unidentified object seen near a Cleveland-bound Continental Airlines plane just after it departed from Houston.
FBI officials said a Continental Airlines pilot told air traffic controllers that an object with a flaming tail and a trail of smoke flew in front of the plane shortly after takeoff. The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force is involved in the investigation, but officials say they believe the flaming projectile seen by the pilot just east of Houston's airport Monday was a model rocket. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Roland Herwig says officials are unsure how high the object flew or how close it came to the plane. An FBI representative said the plane wasn't in any danger, it landed safely Monday. The Boeing 737 was carrying 148 passengers. The FBI routinely looks into any suspicious activity that involves an airplane. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Copyright © 2008, NewsNet5.
