ImageHOUSTON, Texas USA — The FBI and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating a close brush between a Continental Airlines jet and a model rocket in the sky over Houston, Texas.

Two Continental pilots reported seeing what appeared to be a rocket in their airspace shortly after takeoff on Monday.

It's still unclear how high the rocket flew or how close it came to the aircraft.

Several local rocketry clubs have been contacted by the FBI, but so far no one has admitted to launching the rocket in question.

Launching model rockets is legal, but rocket hobbyists are required to notify the FAA if their rockets are powerful enough to exceed certain altitudes.

Some of the most powerful homemade rockets can reach altitudes of 40,000 feet.

The Continental plane was at an altitude of roughly 5,000 feet and was nearly 11 miles away from George Bush Intercontinental Airport when the pilots sighted the rocket.
