ImagePAGOSA SPRINGS, Colorado USA — Now is your chance to get the kit that started it all — the MMI Aerobee-Hi kit.  Originally produced by Orville Carlisle and Model Missiles, Inc., Quest Aerospace has re-created a limited collector's edition for distribution at NARAM 50.

But you don't have to wait to pre-order one or even attend NARAM to get it.  Quest is accepting pre-orders at their website, and the kits will begin shipping after NARAM concludes.  The limited quantity, authentic reproduction of the famous Model Missiles, Inc. kit is based on actual components from the G.H. Stine archives.

Features include:

  • Authentic convolute wound body tube.
  • Dimensionally accurate Balsa nose cone.
  • One-piece paper motor mount tube.
  • Balsa Display stand
  • Water-slide decal
  • Authentic Instruction sheet illustrated in same style as the original.
  • Suggested Retail: $15.00

This is a boxed kit with a reproduction label. It is the Aerobee Hi rocket only and does not include the original MMI launch stand or, unfortunately, any Rock-A-Chute motors. The kit will be available July 26, 2008 for those attending the NARAM 50 Old Rocketeers Reunion in Manassas, VA. For those not attending this event, this item will begin shipping the first week of August 2008.

I love Aerobees. They fly great!

Bill Stine is living his dream lifestyle in Pagosa Springs, CO AND rockets all the time. Jealousy is the proper response.

I'm glad to see Quest moving in this direction.
Scale kits and retro items are going to bring in customers.
The plastic 3FNC stuff doesn't attract my eye at all.
I hope that they continue to work in this direction.
Now, if they could come up with a scale Ares1 model before anyone else...

Quest's web site seems to be down at the moment -- perhaps because of a rush of pre-orders?

As I recall the original MMI Aerobee-Hi had a rubber/plastic nose cone

the first MMI Aerobee-Hi's had a hardwood nose cone that was later replaced with a PVC plastic nose cone.

Pagosa Springs is a beautiful spot and some of the best night skies I've seen in a while w/o going way out to the boonies--I am definitely jealous.

I'm pre-ordering this model and was checking Quest's website; why does this
kit have a $10.50 hazmat/shipping charge?! Does the kit include any engines?
Unless I'm missing something.....

I am not sure why that says that, but it is the only option available. It may be their lowest shipping and handling charge.

On my order it shows as: SH_CONSUMER SHIPPING/HANDLING

Several months ago I mail ordered from Quest the Flat Cat B/G and several
packages of the Q2 igniters, and the S&H was much lower. Maybe a quick
e-mail to Quest customer service should suffix....

Just pre-ordered a couple, they look great and Quest is one heck of a great company. May they live long and prosper.

You'll be pleased when you get it. I only ordered one at the $10 price offered to NARAM participants, and when I opened my kit I immediately wished I'd ordered a few more. When I got home I did order four more at the $15 price, so I would've saved $20.

The kit *is* a reproduction of the original kit, as close as possible. The convolute tube, the four line parasheet, the instruction sheet, etc.

Sadly, the vinyl nose cone is not part of the reproduction. The part is balsa, but it has a hardwood dowel insert to anchor the screweye, which I think is how the original maple nose cone was done.

USPS tracking data confirms that my package has arrived at our local post office early this morning; that means I should see it in my mailbox either today
or tomorrow. WOO - HOO!!

Quick update: My little girl just handed me a Priority Mail mailing box from an
address in Pagosa Springs, CO. Looks like I'm gonna be "off line" for a little
while.....

Now this is cool stuff. A big hand of applause for Quest and Bill's commitment to the hobby. He does his father proud.

You got that right. Has to be one of the loveliest spots in this great state (and the rest of Colorado ain't too bad either ...). Probably time to think about retiring to the new "Rocket Capital of the World" (or at least Colorado).

So I gotta ask.

How many folks are gonna buy this thing and fly it, how many are just gonna be a collector, and how many already have their e-bay posting written?

Count me as one who will build AND fly mine (will fly as many times as possible). I've said this before and will say it again: If a model rocket isn't
flown, it ISN'T a model rocket -- just a model.

BTW, some pics of mine I took this evening (no build; just the box and contents):

HAZMAT on shipping? Shipping was nearly as much as the rocket @ $10.50!!

Good looking kit though, I ordered one to play with...love the packaging too!

Agreed on both counts; the packaging alone should be a collector's item.
