AURORA, Ohio USA — The city parks and recreation committee has paved the way for two hobby groups to use a city-owned field on Bartlett Road for their activities.
At the panel's June 5 meeting, members had no problem with allowing the Aurora Radio Controlled Flying Club and Mantua Township Missile Agency to use the field at the former Ray Harmon farm. The flying club pilots radio-controlled airplanes, while the missile agency shoots off small model rockets. Panelist Nina DeWitt questioned a representative of the missile agency about the size of the rockets, saying she saw a show on television about model rocketry. Spokesman Bruce Levison said some "high-powered" rockets can be 6 feet tall, but the local club's rockets are not more than 3 to 4 feet tall. "To launch the bigger ones, we'd need much more land area than what's available at the Harmon farm," he said. "And our insurance would not cover bigger rockets." Parks-Rec Director Jim Kraus said the next step is for Law Director Alan Shorr to draw up a use agreement with the two organizations. Copyright © 2008, Aurora Advocate.

Re: Planes, rockets come to Aurora city land
Perfect example of a town council basing their decisions on what the media has portrayed as being representative of the hobby. We need to stay informed on what they are seeing and using as a basis for their decisions.

Couldn't have had a better rep there for MTMA than Bruce. I'm glad they are able to use the field together - sounds like a win-win.
