Re: Quest now shipping the new D5-0 plugged rocket engine
Whoa, 20mm. OD. I was hoping to fly some in a saucer considering I have no RC/ gliders but now an adapter or completely new rocket with a funky motor tube will be needed.
Nevertheless, I am positive that Bill and Quest will respond soon with a new line of rocket vehicles as well as D5's with delays.
How about a scale Ares I or Jupiter?

I want it! Do you think it would be enough for my super nova payloader?

I just bought 10, and luckily I remembered my NAR 2008 discount! It expires this month so I just snuck in under the wire. At qty 10, it just about offsets the hazmat shipping.

Would be great for a cluster flight 2 or 4 around a center Estes with a long delay.

So why do these require Hazmat? I wouldn't think these are any more dangerous than an Estes E9 and they don't require Hazmat to ship.

Actually the E9 does require Hazmat. Anything over 30g of propellant weight requires Hazmat. E9's have 36g of propellant - anyone shipping these without Hazmat is breaking the law.
Do a google search for "Estes E9 Hazmat" and you will find a number of references. Here is one of Apogee's references.
On that page search for "hazmat" and you will see the following:
Quote:
Q. How come Apogee Doesn't sell the Estes E9-4 motor?
A. We can't legally ship that motor through the postal system because it contains more than 30 grams of propellant. We would have to ship it via UPS or FedEx, and they charge an additional $20 HAZMAT fee. That really makes the E9-4 an expensive motor for you. It is better to use the Aerotech E15-4 motor for the first flight in this kit anyway. The E15 can be shipped through the postal system without an additional HAZMAT fee, so you save money!

I ordered 8 motors on July 10th and they arrived yesterday (July 16th). The motors were $5.00 each and shipping was $12.02.
For those of you who are scratch building a rocket for this motor, here are some dimensions taken from an actual motor.
The casing is 90.0 mm long. Without the paper label, the nozzle end is 19.8 mm in diameter and narrows to 19.2mm starting about 3/4" from the top, plugged end. The paper label does not fit tightly and it's only glued in a couple of places. The paper the label is printed in is about the same weight as 20 lb bond.
Here are some pictures of an actual motor:

Here are a couple of pictures with the label peeled off.

Note: The white areas are where the glue was holding on the paper label.

What is that line? A seam? Pretty clean looking motor though.

A seam from the final layer of paper I'd think... Motor casings aren't spiral wound like body tubes, they are 'flat wound' on a mandrel like aluminum foil or toilet paper is wrapped around it's core tube. That's why there is a marked seam where the last layer is cut off and glued down. FWIW OL JR

Re: Quest now shipping the new D5-0 plugged rocket engine
Bill Stine is reporting the following for the new motors: Quote: We got a few emails from folks who flew their D5's this past weekend.
Note: The Q2G2 igniter is a 6V igniter designed to work on the Quest 9V and Estes 6V "weenie" launch controllers.
When you hook these up to a higher current launch system - it is possible they will go when you insert your safety key.
Please do a test firing with your launch system FIRST.
We've included two igniters with every motor.
Thanks!
