EMRR has the bestest contest. I only wish I had more time to enter them.

You got that right. I really enjoyed the most recent one just wrapping up (Box-O-Parts). On this one it isn't just a lack of time - I don't have the experience or equipment (Video Camera) to try this. Rocket Kyle's Southern Thunder video is too long for the contest but it shows just how great video's like this can be.

After watching Doug Gerrard's Saturday night at the movies at the last NCR launch, I'll go out on a limb and say that if he enters, it will be no contest. We're talking 1000 frames per second of high-quality film and years of cool flights to choose from. He has a clip looking down at a big scale Saturn V that could be mistaken for that cool Apollo liftoff movie except there's no ice falling down, and the rocket has clear plastic fin extensions. And the skidmark videos are just phenomenal. I don't think I'm going to bother doing rocketry video after seeing that because he does it done better than I thought it was possible to be done.

UV,

Doug mentioned some has been transferred to DVD and is available. Saturday nite at the movies, Warren Musselman dubbed this "rocket pornography"--meant as the highest compliment and dead accurate. Actually its better than any porn I've seen--jaw dropping ga-ga kind of cool as the skids molten titantium hits the tower and does an incandescent dance in higb rez 40x slo-mo.

Adrian is absolutely spot on when he says doing video almost seems pointless. Doug got back into the hobby expressly for the intent of doing video, has been pursuing this passion with great skill and diligence for a decade, and while I have seen some cool stuff, this guy is Rembrandt.

The on-board stuff is state of the art (as good or better than NASA) but the real fun are the amazing tower sequences at 8 to 25x slo-mo in film quality. Wow. (NASA should hire him for the next documentary and folks would stop grumbling about costs).

Issue 70 of Extreme Rocketry did an in depth interview with Doug. Here is a website now 7 years old describing his L3 project: http://www.rocketryphotogr...s/RocketsMyMindsEye.html

That was what a decade ago--he has been busy since!

I'll try to find out for you--unless someone else knows--the impression I got is that it was another group who purchased the rights to some footage, so I don't think it's thru Doug directly. I'll be curious to see how well the film transferred.
