ARGONIA, Kansas USA — Labor Day weekend at LDRS in the Kloudbuster's Rocket Pasture continues, and the Tripoli Rocketry Association has announced next year's venue for the organization's annual rocket launch. 2009 will find the launch moving to the East coast, near Penn Yan, New York, July 2-6.
The location is the Potter Farm, outside Potter, New York, currently host to the Potter Youth Rocketry Oganization, National Association of Rocketry Section #667. The field is also the scene of NYPEX II, held on Monday, July 28th, the day after NYPOWER13, where an O motor was flown, and carries a 15,000 waiver.
The winning bid for LDRS28 was submitted by Debra Kolums, Neil McGilvrey and Bob Utley, and will be hosted by Tripoli Western New York, Maryland Delaware Rocketry Association (MDRA), Metropolitan Rocketry Association (METRA) and Tripoli Central Virginia. ROCKETS Magazine will be the sponsor.
Commerical launches will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturdat with Sunday and Monday reserved for research motors.
Speaking of research, TRA announced changes to their research rules at this year's LDRS, which allows members 18 years of age to fly Level 0 motors and certify Level 1, as well as fly Level 1 and certify Level 2 at upcoming research events.
Certification at Tripoli research launches remains the same as certification at all launches, requiring the use of certified motors with the same impulse limits. All levels of Tripoli certification can take place at a Tripoli research launch. To participate in flights containing research motors still requires the member to be Tripoli Level 2 certified while flights using research motors still must be within the flier's certification level.
These changes are effective immediately.
Preliminary election results show incumbents Ken Good and Terry McCreary being elected for another term, to be joined by Stu Barrett, who was seated for his first term. Congratulations to all of the candidates.

To Neil, Bob & Deb... EXCELLENT WORK !!! Having LDRS on the east coast again is outstanding!!! Next year will be a busy one... Red Glare Launches, NYPOWER, NERRF, and now LDRS 28 !!! Not to mention our regular METRA & MDRA monthly launches. Hell, I may just run out of propellant now!
Too bad I am sitting here in my living room typing this, and not in Argonia with you guys, but I will see you all very shortly.
I guess the 3/4 Patriot will now have another place to fly !!!
My reservations have already been made !!!
The countdown is on !!!

Jerry,
TRA does not select the weekend, the prefecture hosting it does. This is the weekend the hosting clubs picked. For the clubs putting it on, it has to do with crop rotation, time off from work to run it, and availability of facilities…
Attendance this year was plus or minus 300 registered flyers, the banquet sold out at 260. Lots of people, and as always, great to see some folks you only get to see once a year.
Erik
Erik,
I was not able to make this years LDRS due to unforseen issues, but would have loved to be there. This is the first LDRS I have missed in some time...
I would ask... How many flyers were there this year (at a different date than normal) than there were the past few years?
If there is a great field that has great weather at some time during the year why not use a different date. Winternationals is early in the year, but the field is great from what I hear. The MDRA Site is rumored to be great as well, but crops pose a problem for an LDRS during summer months.
Thanks
Tom

Tom,
MDRA is by far one of the best launch sites in the east, and yes, the crops would be a BIG problem for hosting an LDRS. In fact, it would be impossible in the summer months, as we move 12 miles down the road to a sod farm to launch from May to September due to crop plantings. Higgs Farm serves as our launch site from October thru April. Tommy Higgs has got to be the finest land owner that there is!! Find a land owner that loves rockets and sets up shop and cooks for everyone!!!
A winter LDRS? That is another story. It would certainly be a first, but the attendance would suffer due to the cold, in the northeast that is.

Hey folks, keep this in mind: This is easy driving range to Watkins Glen and if there is a race happening, hotel rooms will be very hard to come by if you wait. They do not have discounts loaded yet (at least not at the Best Western), however you can always get the room and settle for price later.
Oh,yeah. Rockets on the 4th of July? What could be better? I need to come up with a red to white to blue air start.

I'm considering making the 4000 mile round trip to attend and the fact that it is on a Holiday weekend makes it even more appealing. It is one less day of vacation that I have to take. Please post the web page here as soon as it is available. Thanks,

Don't forget our hydraulic towers! I do not feel like hoisting a 310 lb. rocket! We are too spoiled at MDRA !!!
