ImageMADISON, Wisconsin USA — A team from Madison West High School placed first in a national model rocket competition Saturday in Virginia, winning a trip to a Paris air show and part of a prize pool worth $60,000.

The team of Jacqui German, Tenzin Sonam, John Schoech and Ben Winokur, all juniors, designed and built a rocket that shot up 750 feet and was airborne at least 45 seconds. It landed with its raw-egg payload undamaged.

The Team America Rocketry Challenge is sponsored by the Aerospace Industries Association and the National Association of Rocketry and is designed to encourage students to consider careers in the aerospace industry.

The winning team was one of three entrants from Madison West.
