Milestone reached in just over one year after its release

ImageRogers Aeroscience is pleased to announce that the wide distribution of the RASAero aerodynamic analysis and flight simulation free software throughout the model rocket, high power rocket, Tripoli Research, and the alt.space/New Space communities has continued with 3000 downloads of the RASAero software from the rasaero.com web site in just over one year after its release. The 3000th download of the RASAero software occurred in mid October, just 13 months after the Sept 11, 2008 release of the software.

Rogers Aeroscience would like to thank the RASAero users for this tremendous response. We've received a lot of very positive feedback from users on the software, and we always appreciate receiving user input and comments. We've received very positive feedback from users on the accuracy of the RASAero altitude predictions when compared to flight data for many of their rockets.

We're always looking for flight data to compare our altitude predictions against to help further improve the accuracy of our flight simulations. The flight data and rocket information can be sent to the e-mail address below. For those interested in running the software we include extensive altitude prediction comparisons and comparisons with wind tunnel data on the RASAero web site.

Additional information on the RASAero software can be found on the RASAero web site at www.rasaero.com. The RASAero authors, Charles E. (Chuck) Rogers and David (Coop) Cooper can be contacted at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it .

I would love to know how the altitude data might change if all baro altimeters had Adrian's temperature/pressure corrections.

You use the same balloon data mods Adrian references.

Did you file your ITAR papers? Collect personal information on each downloader?

You are giving/selling ballistic missile software.

This was extensively discussed in another forum, with comments from those experienced in ITAR matters, including references to specific sections of the ITAR regulations.

The methods used in RASAero are from non-ITAR sources, and similar aerodynamic predictions are routinely published in non-ITAR papers.

RASAero will very accurately predict your altitude based on launch site temperature and pressure and launch angle, but as it is not a full 6-DOF software package, you can't use it to hit a particular target. And guidance is not included, so no; you can't use it to design a ballistic missile.

It's very accurate for flight simulation and altitude prediction, but it doesn't pass any of the key tests for being ITAR software.

Indeed. All altimeters, as far as I know, (including mine) assume the standard atmosphere model when converting pressure to altitude. And all can make use of the balloon sounding data after the fact to correct that estimate. I have an excel-based tool around here somewhere that has step-by-step instructions

May I see a log of that forum conversation?
Perhaps post a link here for all to see.
If you need webspace to place only that particular segment, I offer it.

That forum (like many) specifically prohibits reposting posts to other forums or web sites.

As a co-developer of the software I'm responsible that its release not violate ITAR regulations. My research, confirmed by others, is that it does not, and hence it was released as a free download on a public web site.

Others will need to do their own due diligence independent research on this issue relative to their software or other products.

Jerry, you seem to have a knack for pissing people off

Hey, Roger - how about a -link- to the thread? Or maybe just the name of the forum and the title of the thread, or are does your NDA cover those, too?

Jerry,

I do not see it as an ITAR issue anymore than other software available. Sure, it can deal with higher velocities and altitudes than some hobby software, but if this is what some person sitting in a cube thinks is a national security issue then they are confused. Many of the papers and data it is based upon have been publicly available for a long time, and yes, that means that anybody can download it and read it.

As Chuck mentioned in his response; "RASAero will very accurately predict your altitude based on launch site temperature and pressure and launch angle, but as it is not a full 6-DOF software package, you can't use it to hit a particular target. And guidance is not included, so no; you can't use it to design a ballistic missile".
Simply stated and with few if any exceptions; "simulations software designed to predict altitude only is not ITAR regulated, but simulations, (a full 6-DOF software package), designed to predict performance, trajectory, and impact/target are ITAR regulated.

I think Jerry was just chiding an old friend, as he and Chuck have history, once upon a time in a land for-for away...
