ImageBATON ROUGE, Louisiana USA — Giant Leap Rocketry, Inc. is pleased to announce a new line of aluminum ogive-shaped tail cone motor retainers.

These retainers come in five different sizes:

  • 38-29mm
  • 54-38mm
  • 76-54mm
  • 76-38mm
  • 98-54mm

The tailcones are precision-machined from 6061 T6 Aircraft-grade aluminum and are hard-anodized to an attractive black finish. The tailcones taper down from the airframe to the motor tube to improve the looks of your rocket and to dramatically reduce drag.

For example, the 98-to-54mm tailcone is for rockets with a 98mm airframe (3.9") and a 54mm motor mount tube. They also securely retain CTI or AeroTech motors. Just insert your motor and the tailcone will lock your motor in place. The tailcone should be installed during the initial assembly of your rocket.

This is actually a big product announcement. Even though a motor retainer is no big deal and whatever shape it is doesn't usually matter much, this will have an interesting effect. Far more people will fly rockets with tail cones more of the time so rockets will simply fly higher and have longer coast times. The fact it auto-installs a tail cone when you retain your motor will be one of the few parts in rocketry that are a "free lunch". Where its cost and mass are quickly offset by rocket performance value.

Great product release guys. Now make a "bra" for non-minimal diameter rockets.

Free lunch? I was under the impression that using a tailcone reduced stability due to reduced base drag. I admit this is not likely in most cases to be an issue as many rockets are overly stable but requires thought before just slapping one on don't you think?

I have used Aeropack tail cone retainers for years. What make GLs differant?

The Aeropack are conical the GL are ogive.

When 5x7 said "the are not conical" he was refering to the GLs, not the Aeropacks.

It's not painted phenolic, it is a new airframe material that is in the works. I have a sample of it (one of the benefits of living 15 mins from Kent at Giant Leap) and it is pretty amazing stuff. That is all I will say about it for now.

I'm pretty sure I've heard of it - looks to be very promising...sly of them to introduce it this way.
