PROSPER, Texas USA — Tragedy struck the family of a member of the Panhandle of Texas Rocketry Society (POTROCS) Friday when an accident claimed his life.  The accident occurred in the area of Texas SH 56 and Craft Road just east of Sherman around 3:30PM.

David Hailey, Sr. of Prosper, Texas, a community north of Dallas, died at the scene following unsuccessful attempts by emergency medical personnel to perform CPR on him.  His Ford F250 pickup truck was struck head-on by a tow truck after the wrecker hydroplaned on the wet road and crossed over into oncoming traffic.

Hailey was an active member of POTROCS and participated in the rocketry hobby with his son, David Jr. When the accident occurred, he was returning home from land the family owned where the father and son team were constructing a workshop for them to build rockets together.

Hailey's pursuit of the hobby together with his son was to encourage his son to get an engineering degree. David Jr. is pursuing that goal, currently attending Purdue University where he participated on the Student Hybrid Rocket Project.

Friend of the family Pat Gordzelik had planned on seeing Hailey and his son at Gordzelik's Cross Plains home today only to discover an email from the family this morning canceling the visit.

"We were excited about seeing our old friends and fellow POTROCS members," Gordzelik said in an email communication about the accident addressed to the members of the POTROCS club.

"He had been working on a project on some land that was actually a joint father/son project to build rockets, and one of the reasons they were coming to Cross Plains was to pick up rocket supplies," Gordzelik added.

The family didn't learn of the accident until after 7:00PM last night, assuming Hailey was just running late.

"David Sr. will be sorely missed," Gordzelik said, an emotion shared by the POTROCS membership.

Services will be held at 1:00PM CST on Tuesday, July 6th, at:

Denton Bible Church
2300 E. University Drive
Denton, Texas 76209

David Hailey, Sr. was 46 years old.

This is so unbelievably sad, I don't know what to say. I met the Haileys at launches in TX a few times, and helped them prep and recover a rocket once. Always very technical about the hobby and seemed to enjoy every minute of it. Very inspirational team. If David Jr is reading this, please contact me any time if you ever need any help.

Life is indeed short and could end any moment. The eerie thing is, I was leaving Canyon yesterday, heading home to Cross Plains so that I could be home to meet the Haileys today. I was going over an overpass in driving rain, and a cattle hauler came blasting by me. He did not see me I guess because I was covered up in his water mist/blast, and was coming into my lane. I was literally inches away from his trailer on my left, and inches away from the guard rail on my right, and I figured my time was up as I saw absolutely no way out. I had applied pressure to the brakes but was not slowing as much as what was needed to evade the truck. At the last moment, as I was saying my prayers, he finally saw me and veered hard left. His now fishtailing trailer swung in front of me, missing my front bumper by inches. I had opted to leave my big trailer in Canyon because of the weather, which was a good thing, because if I had been pulling it, there was no way I would have been able to slow down as much as I had.

I was so shook up, I had pulled over, shaking. My phone rang, and it was Retta, checking on me. Women/wifes seem to possess premonition. I told her what had just happened. This morning I checked the time recorded on my phone when Retta had called me.

It was yesterday @ 3:22 PM.

I have been thinking all day long what David Jr. and his family is going through. I thought about waking up this morning, and excitedly preparing for the David's visit. I had even pulled some pork ribs out of the freezer to smoke for dinner for us all.

And then I checked my email. After I had called David (I simply did not know what to say), Retta woke up and came into my office, and asked if the Haileys were here yet. All I could do was show her David's email.

Hug your loved ones. You never know.

And David, if you are reading this, like John D said, if there is anything, anything we can do.........

Although I had never met the Hailey's, if they're rocketry people, they're family. While there never is a good time to lose someone, losing someone so young seems that much more terrible. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

These are some photos of David Jr. and David Sr. prepping David's O to N two stage rocket at Balls last year. David Jr. has been working over winter and summer breaks from school to build the next, bigger, better version of this rocket. Both Davids are world class rocketeers, and David Sr. was with David Jr. every step of the way.

David Sr. was someone really passionate about the hobby. What an awful, awful loss.

*updated: added a few more photos taken by my dad.

Thank you for posting this article. My husband, Sean, and his close friend, Dr. Brown, a local surgeon, arrived on the scene just minutes after the accident. They pulled David out of the truck and performed CPR for 30 minutes on him. They really cared for him and fought for his life. They prayed over him during and after his passing. I am so sorry for your loss. We have all shed tears over a man that we didn't even know. I ran across your article while trying to find out who he was. Again, we are very sorry for your loss. Please know that we have many people praying for your family.

Wow, this breaks my heart even though I've never met the Haileys. My father was incredibly supportive in my pursuit of HPR and we spent a great deal of my life launching rockets together. Seeing a similar father son team end so tragically really moves me and I have the sincerest compassion for David Jr. and his family. I will be thinking and praying for the Haileys...wish there was more I could do.

My condolences to the family. I lost my father 9 years ago and nary a day goes by that I don't think about him and his legacy. David Jr. -- I'm sure all of us at Tripoli Indiana will be available for support when you are up in West Lafayette.

I met the Haileys several years ago. Father Son teams always stand out in the crowd and in my memory. The news of this tragedy is heartbreaking.

I wish the best for David Jr and the family.

Again, David if there is ever anything I can do for you, please give me a call.
