The system is fully modular, configurable and programmable, yet is extremely cost effective. It supports flights up to the full FAA Level 3 requirements. Potential applications include Active Flight Stabilization (using UFC-3 Inertial Sensor Module and the four on-board Advanced Stepper Motor Controllers for control surfaces or the Digital Flow Control Module for cold gas jets), liquid/hybrid motor propellant flow control (using the DFCM), special user Data Acquisition Systems, etc. In order to meet the needs of the widest possible range of applications the Open System Developer's Module was designed to allow the user to create their own software and hardware applications to supplement and enhance the capabilities of the system. It is up to the user to decide whether to use a currently implemented function or design their own custom implementation. Projects can be as simple or complex as desired and the up to date design tools and hardware platform provide an excellent basis for learning and development in a short period of time and reasonable budget. You need only purchase a $400 module and $90 programming/debugging pod to create a new functional module. The free software and hardware developments tools are supported by Cypress Semiconductor. Black Magic works closely with all of its customers to achieve the best possible result. The complete OSDM specification can be downloaded from http://www.blackmagicmissileworks.com/downloads.htm. Is that FAA Class 3 or NAR/Tripoli Level 3? I assume FAA Class 3, but it is a little confusing.

In early 2008 the FAA created a new Class III for high power rocketry, allowing flights to 150Km, but requiring considerably tighter control of the rocket. The UFC-3 provides a GPS capable of working above 60,000' (the only one available), an Inertial Sensor for attitude detection prior to motor airstarts and the user control functions to make use of it, plus a Telemetry uplink to provide overrides.
