ImageBATON ROUGE, Louisiana USA — Giant Leap Rocketry, Inc. has just released its new Magna-Frame, a composite airframe of high-strength, grey vulcanized fiber interlaced with phenolic. There is a proprietary coating inside and out that seals out moisture. It is then high-temperature cured to create a high-strength composite structure.

Magna-Frame uses a military-grade vulcanized fiber for extreme strength (you'll know because it is grey). Phenolic is resistant to moisture and pure vulcanized paper tubes. The propriety coating further ensures that the airframe stays straight. According to Giant Leap, Magna-Frame is a high-performance tube that is light, inexpensive and safe.

It was successfully tested at a velocity of about 2100 ft/sec (nearly Mach 2 — with higher speed tests to come). Magna-Frame is compatible with CA and epoxy adhesives. To learn more about Magna-Frame, log on to their website.

Sweet another cool choice for airframes.. and the price seems pretty fair.

It looks as though one would still have to fill the spiral groove. Does anyone know for certain?

If you want it perfectly smooth you would have to fill it, but it is not very deep from what I have heard. I can fill almost any spiral groove and be ready for paint in less than an hour. I would not let that slow me down.

How do fill the grooves in the tubes you use. I remember doing my L-3 project which I used PML 7.5 tubes, it took me forever and a lot of wrok.

I hate to use another companies name but if it is anything like Blue Tube, then it should not take much to fill.

I filled my last Blue tube project with two layers of heavy primer.. NOTHING else..

I've done it several different ways. Easiest is spot body putty. Let it harden and then sand it off. That works well for small volumes, but shrinkage causes spot body putty to crack if you use it for larger volumes like fillets.
I have also used Fill and Finish, watered down very slightly or body filler, but with body filler you have to work fast, which is also why I like it. I mix in less catalyst so it hardens more slowly. I leave it proud and then sand it off after it's hard. With body filler you can sand it very quickly.

When I have filled spirals I used Super Fil epoxy filler. I never have had anything but excellent results with it. Heck, I used it for filling mold lines on plastic nosecones. Great stuff.

Gary, I found it to be pretty easy. Granted I try to work clean, but I did a 54mm phenolic airframe that was 3' in length and if memory serves I think it took me 20 minutes or so to sand.

Are you heading to Bong this Saturday?
