OREM, Utah USA — Last night on the NAR web site details were posted about NAR's new insurance. It appears that the new NAR policy will satisfy the requirements of our own insurance company, but we cannot be totally sure until we see the policy. However, we will accept this on good faith. Tripoli congratulates the NAR on their newest achievement.

The new policy like our own is NOT optional, although it was obtained at a lower cost than our policy. Our policy may have some features worth the extra premium, but again we cannot be sure without examining the policy.

As of tomorrow, ALL NAR members will be insured. Therefore, ALL NAR members may participate in high power rocketry activities sponsored by Tripoli simply by presenting a membership card showing current active status. As is the case with Tripoli members, it is unnecessary to have printed on the membership card "Insured" since active status will be proof (to us) of insurance.

Prefects and launch organizers are urged to make sure the safety codes are being followed at Tripoli launches without regard to any participant's organizational affiliation. The important thing is to check membership cards and to be sure that each high power participant flies only those rockets powered by motors at the individual's TRA or NAR certification level - unless the flight is a certification flight at the next level.

Additionally, anyone with or without any organizational affiliation may fly model rockets powdered by A-G motors at Tripoli launches - as long as they observe the Safety Code.

Fortunately, the insurance nightmare is almost over for both organizations. Though we are insured, I have instructed our broker to keep our association on the market to find either a policy like the one we have now for less, or to find a less expensive policy that will also meet our needs.

I am also working with the Canadian Rocketry Association (CAR) for a similar arrangement. CAR also obtained an insurance policy last December. We will post more details as they become available.

At LDRS this coming July, I will announce details about plans for Tripoli to self-insure within a few years. We cannot afford these roller-coaster rides when companies decide to cancel without reason or cause.

With the dawning of Spring, we have a new launching season. Let's not be lulled into a false sense of security because we have insurance - thinking we can be less cautious because, if something happens, it will be covered. A negligent act can cause the cancellation of any policy. I know how hard it is to obtain one. The number of companies willing to insure rocketry activities is very few and we cannot afford to lose even one of them. Let's play safe, play legal, and have fun.
