SMITHS FALLS, Ontario CAN — In what appears to be a banner year for announcements of new hybrid motor manufacturers, Tripoli Motor Testing chairperson Sue McMurarry announced today the official TMT recognition of Propulsion Polymers as an legal manufacturer of hybrid hobby rocketry motors, effective June 1, 2000. With the announcement, official representatives of the company are allowed to do demonstration launches at sanctioned TRA events.
Propulsion Polymers is owned and operated by Marcus Leech, a systems and network security architect for a major telecommunications equipment vendor. Leech is building Propulsion Polymers in his spare time, with his systems integration facility and "vehicle assembly building" located on a 35-acre farm near Smiths Falls, Ontario, Canada. Propulsion Polymers manufacturers small hybrid rocket motors, and related support equipment, for the hobby rocketry community.
Their 38mm hybrid motor system is a modular design, with total thrust ranging from 'G' through 'J' power levels. Based on off-the-shelf 1.5" tubing in 10", 15", 20" and 30" configurations, their design uses off-the-shelf 1" Schedule 80 pipe as a hydrocarbon fuel with a minimal amount of machining to meet the pressure-seal requirements of the motor. The oxidizer is standard liquid nitrous oxide, available in almost any modest-sized locality.
