LUCERNE DRY LAKE BED, California USA — At ROC-Stock XI a new sight and sound rattled the playa, the P38 Solid Propellant Motors from Cesaroni Technology/blacksky. With the approval of TMT and ROC, a manufacturers demonstration of motors ranging from G through J was accomplished.
Scott Bartel of blacksky supervised the activity while James Eadie, Loren Bjerk, Val Derklach, Andy Woerner and Jim Domenoe provided the airframes for the demonstrations. With each flight, the crowd of over one thousand commented on the golden color of the motor exhaust and the volume of tracking smoke. Also different was the sound, a "ripping" sound, especially distinct in the J motors.
The Pro38 motors are all 38mm and are distinctly different from current reloadable motor systems. With the Pro38 system, a single component is saved from flight to flight, the Motor Casing. All other parts including the aft closure, nozzle, liner and forward closure comprise the Reload Assembly, which is disposable after use. Another key feature is the Delay Adjustment Tool. All delays delivered are long, and the tool is used to shorten the delay to the desired timing. Other features include an installed delay charge, a high reliability igniter and igniter pellet at the head end of the motor which promotes reliable ignition.
There is a single propellant type available at this time with more to come. Motor types and performance is shown in the table below.
