WORLD WIDE WEB — The Calgary Rocketry Association (CRA) is pleased to announce that we will be hosting CARNAT 2001, in Calgary, Alberta from August 20th to August 25th. CARNAT is the national model rocketry competition open to all Canadian Association of Rocketry (CAR) members, junior and senior. NAR and Tripoli members are welcome, although you must be a CAR member to qualify for CAR competition records.

To follow up all the building and launch sessions the CRA has held over the last couple of years, we are holding a "novice" competition event open to all students and the members of various youth groups (Scouts, Guides, Boys and Girls Clubs, Boy's Brigade, etc.) The competition will be be a timed "duration" event, and will be limited to the types of rockets that the youth have built with the CRA.

CARNAT 2001 will be held immediately following the Lethbridge International Airshow, which is held on the 18th and 19th of August. There will be a high power demonstration launch taking place at the airshow and we are planning a one day HPR launch for CARNAT participants on the Monday after the airshow.

Tuesday will be set aside as a travel day so anyone who would like to could take in some of the surrounding areas such as Banff National Park, or Kananaskis Country. Tuesday night will be the official sign in and meet and greet. Competition will begin on Wednesday morning. The planned events should take three days to complete and we have set one day as a tour day when we will be arranging tours of some of the local facilities, including the Calgary Aerospace Museum, Calgary Science Centre, etc. If we have a day of bad weather we will do the tours on that day, if not, the tours are planned for Saturday. The wrap-up awards banquet will be held Saturday evening. We are also planning to have guest speakers to give talks during some the evenings through the week.

Not all of the details have been finalized but we wanted to let everyone know about CARNAT 2001 as soon as possible so anyone wishing to travel out here to compete would have time to plan and build. The cost to participants will be $40.00 for seniors and $20.00 for juniors. The fees will include the awards banquet, meet and greet, tours, guest speakers and of course the competitions. Fees will be $10.00 for "novice" competitors. More details will be provided as they become available.

Competitions planned for CARNAT 2001 are as follows:

  • A Rocket Glide, 20 points
  • D Streamer Duration, 11 points
  • Sport Scale, 20 Points
  • Design Efficiency Altitude (greatest meters/NS), 10 points
  • C Super Roc Altitude (125 cm -250 cm tall), 16 Points
  • D Egg loft Duration, 17 points
  • Set Duration (parachute/streamer) 75 Sec, 8 points
